About the department

The department was established in 1978 as the Department of Biology, which was upgraded to Honours level in 1996 with 13 students and three full time faculty members. During 2003-04, the department was further elevated to Post-Graduate status under the University of Calcutta. The academic autonomy was achieved during the very next year (2004-05). Since 2008-09 the department has been affiliated to the West Bengal State University. The department enriched itself with well-equipped laboratories for both undergraduate and postgraduate students where they get hands on training on different modern techniques.
